Mark Scheinberg, an Israeli-Canadian businessman and investor, co-founder of PokerStars

My name is Mark Scheinberg, an Israeli-Canadian businessman and investor specializing in luxury real estate and the hospitality industry. I’m best known for co-founding PokerStars, one of the world’s largest online poker platforms. In 2014, we sold PokerStars to Amaya Gaming, a Canadian company, for an impressive $4.9 billion. My Background I was born in Israel in 1973 and moved to Toronto, Canada, with my family when I was 13. We settled in Richmond Hill in the 1980s. My career took off in 2001 when my father, software developer Isai Scheinberg, and I launched PokerStars. Under my leadership, PokerStars grew to become the largest online poker platform globally and hosted the world’s largest online poker tournaments. In 2012, we acquired the Full Tilt Poker brand, expanding our influence in the online gambling industry. In 2014, the parent company of PokerStars, Oldford Group Ltd, was acquired by Amaya Gaming Group. After the successful transaction, I left PokerStars to focus on new business ventures and personal growth. Mohari Hospitality Today, I am the founder of Mohari Hospitality, an investment company focused on luxury real estate and high-end hospitality projects. Our investments include notable properties like Peninsula Resort in Costa Rica, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Waldorf Astoria Miami, and Four Seasons Private Residences in Washington, D.C. To strengthen our strategic position, we welcomed former Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts CEO J. Allen Smith as a managing partner in Mohari Hospitality. In 2017, Mohari Hospitality became a major investor in the Centro Canalejas Madrid project in Spain, a historic real estate restoration involving seven significant buildings in central Madrid. This landmark project includes residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces, including Spain’s first Four Seasons hotel. Current Projects and Investments In 2017, we acquired Thompson Toronto, a luxury boutique hotel in Toronto’s downtown with 105 rooms, restaurants, and event spaces. In April 2023, Mohari acquired a controlling stake in Noah Tepperberg's Tao Group for $550 million, aiming to integrate Tao's luxury hospitality brands across our existing assets. According to Forbes, as of 2024, my net worth is estimated at $5.6 billion. Personal Life and Philanthropy I currently reside on the Isle of Man and am deeply committed to philanthropy. In 2020, my family and I established the Scheinberg Relief Fund, dedicating $50 million to support communities directly impacted by COVID-19. Environmental conservation and animal welfare are other causes I’m passionate about. Our support for the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, alongside charities like Save the Rhino Trust, focuses on preserving endangered species and sustaining biodiversity.
